At the Muslim Legal Network’s 10th Annual Grand Iftar, I was deeply humbled to receive recognition for my contributions to the Network over recent years.

I was particularly touched by the generous acknowledgment from keynote Chief Judge Amanda Chambers and the encouragement of my colleagues on the Network's Committee of Management.

As reported in the Australasian Muslim Times, 'the night saw the introduction of a new Award for a Board Member who has made a remarkable and defining contribution to the MLN. Sam Bektas received this award for his extensive contributions to stakeholder engagement, financial sustainability and strategic planning', reflecting the Network’s appreciation for those 'who work quietly yet tirelessly behind the scenes'.

Moments like this are a reminder that the work of volunteer-led institutions is sustained by many people quietly giving their time, skills and goodwill in service of something larger than themselves.

During Ramadan especially, we are reminded that the true value of service lies not in recognition but in intention. It is about contributing where we can, strengthening community, and striving to leave things better than we found them.

Grateful for the opportunity to play a small part alongside such dedicated colleagues and friends.
